It’s spring, and time for a clear-out. Many cosmetics should be discarded after a maximum of six months if they’ve been opened – but it’s too easy to hang on to a dried-up mascara or a gloopy lip gloss. You can get away with keeping a lipstick for a lot longer, but products used on your eyes, such as mascara and liquid liner, can harbour germs that can cause infection. The good news is, you can chuck all the tired, old cosmetics in the bin, and replenish your make-up bag for less than £25 – a total of SEVEN essential products to put a spring in your step. We’ve put together a dream make-up bag, with some of the best quality products around.
RIMMEL BB CREAM MATTE LIGHT (£6.99 Superdrug)
This BB cream will see you right through spring into summer. It’s very lightweight, but still gives good coverage, disguising blemishes and fine lines while keeping the complexion looking healthy and natural. For best results, start with a tiny amount and build up coverage in the areas you need it more.BUY ME!
NATURAL COLLECTION PRESSED POWDER (£1.99 Boots)
Pressed powder is a must, even if you don’t want a matte finish. It’s great for keeping eyeshadow and eyeliner in place, and a little dusting over lipstick will stop it ‘bleeding’ into lines around the mouth. And for spots and blemishes, simply press the powder on for the perfect cover-up. This comes in Warm, Neutral and Cool shades, and although it doesn’t come with a powder puff, you can use cotton wool or buy a puff for under £1.BUY ME!
BARRY M CHISEL CHEEKS CONTOUR KIT (£5.49 Boots)
We do love a multi-use product, and this one does a few jobs. It works as a blusher, as a contouring kit, to shade and define the face, and also as a highlighting and concealing kit. It includes a light colour to highlight, a medium shade for bronzing and blushing, and a darker shade for contouring. And importantly, it includes a simple how-to so you can easily learn contouring.BUY ME!
COLLECTION VOLUME LIPSTICK (£2.99 Superdrug & Boots)
This lovely new range from Collection has all this season’s must-have nude shades. This Pink Rose shade is particularly pretty – it’s a matte finish, and isn’t drying, so it has great staying power. Other shades include Tulip, which is more pink and a matte finish, and Fuchsia, a soft pink in a glossy finish.BUY ME!
2TRUE WOW MASCARA BLACK (£1.99 Superdrug)
This is on offer, reduced from £3, and it’s brilliant value. It doesn’t clog or flake, and the short-bristled brush means you can get to the root of every lash. Two coats gives a perfect defined eye.BUY ME!
NYC KOHL PENCIL IN CHOCOLATE BROWN, BLUE JEANS, PURE WHITE OR PURE BLACK (£1.99 Superdrug)
This is a great buy – it’s soft, creamy, doesn’t drag the skin around the eyes, and stays on for hours. When buying a bargain eyeliner, always check it on the back of your hand – if the pencil is too hard, it’ll be difficult to apply, and can cause damage to the delicate area around the eyes. Give this a little smudge with a cotton bud after application to keep it looking natural.BUY ME!
ESSENCE COLOUR AND GO NAIL POLISH IN SHADE 189 (£1.60 wilko.com)
Nails are all about nude this spring, and this is a lovely shade. It’s in a satin finish, so has a slight sheen that makes nails look longer. Great for everyday wear, and with touch-ups, you’ll get at least a week out of one application.BUY ME!
